Cataracts and Astigmatism
Many patients suffer visual distortion caused by astigmatism. This happens when the cornea is not perfectly spherical, but is steeper in one meridian than another. A person with cataracts and corneal astigmatism will not regain high-quality distance vision unless the astigmatism is also corrected.
One of the most exciting new lenses on the market is Alcon’s AcrySof Toric IOL. This lens allows us to accurately and permanently correct astigmatism in our patients at the time of cataract surgery. The Toric lens produces dramatic improvement in distance vision, often eliminating the need for glasses.
