A Premium IOL

God designed our eye to accommodate so that we can focus to read. This ability decreases at age 40 as the eye’s natural lens begins to thicken and harden, making it difficult for the muscle in the eye to focus the lens. This loss of accommodation is known as presbyopia, and its earliest symptom is difficulty seeing things up close. Presbyopia is treated with glasses. The Crystalens® was designed to replace the eye’s natural lens or cataract and restore the eye’s ability to accommodate to eliminate the need for reading glasses. Unlike the standard intraocular lens which is “fixed” within the eye and corrects vision at a single focus (usually distance), the Crystalens® uses the eye’s natural focusing muscles to accommodate the full range of vision. The Crystalens® enables the eye to focus seamlessly through a range of distances, from near to far, and everything in between. This continuous range of vision provided by the Crystalens® greatly reduces the need for spectacle correction.

Crystalens® Intraocular Lens (IOL) Technology

The Crystalens® represents a revolutionary breakthrough in intraocular lens (IOL) technology.
It has been rated as the #1 Presbyopia Correcting IOL in the US. More about Crystalens and cataracts.

With this new lens, patients can recover youthful vision – a full range of vision without glasses following surgery. Unlike any other lens currently available, the Crystalens® Accommodating IOL is designed to allow patients to see objects that are close up, at a distance, and all ranges in between. Hear about Florence Henderson’s Crystalens experience.

In the past, patients have had to choose their visual goal prior to surgery. The most commonly used implants today provide distance vision, with patients routinely using reading glasses to see up close. Another option is monovision, where one eye is focused for distance and the other eye for up close. This provides functional vision at most distances, but at the expense of depth perception. This is certainly not what we would describe as youthful vision.

This revolutionary technology allows the Crystalens® to provide a unique and seamless focusing system for patients, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for glasses. This new replacement lens is the first and only intraocular lens that is designed to allow the lens to move, or accommodate to focus on objects near, far and all distances in-between.

With the Crystalens®, patients experience the same vision they had when they were younger, without the inconvenience of corrective lenses or eyeglasses. Dr. Alan Aker is honored to be one of the first eye surgeons in the country to be able to offer this state-of-the-art replacement lens.

In the Crystalens® FDA two-year clinical study, 98% of the patients could pass their drivers test, 100% could see their computer and dashboard, read the prices in the supermarket or put on their makeup, and 98% could read the telephone book or newspaper, all without glasses or contact lenses.
