What Will The Initial Visit Be Like?
Your initial visit will be extensive and thorough. You should plan to spend one to two hours with us. It will include a microscopic exam to check for the presence of cataracts, glaucoma and other eye diseases, a test to check your eye pressure, and a dilated exam to check the health of your retina. You should be aware that your eyes will remain dilated for several hours after you leave the clinic. We suggest you have someone drive you home after your appointment.

Our Approach to Surgery
When should cataract surgery be performed? For a surgeon blessed with good judgment, cataract/implant surgery is a brief and straightforward operation to perform. Although a cataract does not have to “ripen” like some optical fruit, if the cataract is causing no significant difficulty, surgery should not be performed. In general, a cataract should be removed when it interferes with an individual’s ability to enjoy life to the fullest. Therefore, if the quality of a person’s life is less because of a cataract, waiting for the cataract to “ripen” is unnecessary.

What If I Have A Cataract?
If you have a cataract and surgery is recommended, additional tests will be performed, usually on your initial visit. This is done to avoid an unnecessary second trip. The additional tests to be performed include the measuring of your eye for the correct lens to be implanted at the time of surgery and evaluating the health of the cornea. If these tests are performed, it will add an additional one to two hours to your visit.

On the day of surgery, plan to spend two to three hours with us. You will also need to return the day after surgery for a post-op check. Your referring physician will see you for any subsequent visits unless specified otherwise.

What If I Have Glaucoma?
If you come to us as a glaucoma patient, in addition to the usual tests done at an initial visit, we will take pictures of the optic nerves of your eyes to document any changes due to glaucoma. You may be placed on a schedule of eye drops and asked to return within a short period of time to determine your response to the medication. You will also be scheduled for a test to check your peripheral vision. Many new advancements in glaucoma are available, please ask one of our clinical physicians if you are a candidate.
